Our School Band

St Paul the Apostle Primary, Winston Hills, provides a range of cultural and artistic opportunities for our students. Among these opportunities is instrumental music.

Students from grades 3 - 6 can participate in our school band program. Teaching Services Australia provides tutors and conductors to teach the band students at our school. For more information about our school band and to keep up-to-date with upcoming performances and events, please follow this link to our school page on the Teaching Australia website.

Through the provider, Teaching Services Australia, St Paul the Apostle offers a school band program and tuition in brass and woodwind instruments. Students are taught by experienced musicians to read music, play the instrument, and perform in a band situation.

The program is offered to students in Years 3 to 6, with small group tutorial lessons provided during school time once each week and with a band rehearsal each week on Wednesday.

For Everyone

The program is directed at maximum participation. There is no audition requirement, and most students commence in the program with no prior musical experience. Fees for the lessons are affordable (please contact Teaching Services Australia (T.S.A.) for pricing information). An instrument hire scheme is available through TSA contacts.

The band performs at school functions, which include concerts, solo performance nights, demonstration concerts for new students, and at other public events. We have participated in large composite bands with other schools for festivals and Christmas carols.

Band Camp

One of the highlights of the music year is the annual band camp, where students of all standards and experience have a weekend of intensive musical experiences, and participate in many other fun activities. We are also lucky enough to have proof of this wonderful experience with a recording by Productive Music (contact TSA for details).

Music Promotes Self Esteem

Some quotes from a recent British study highlighting the benefits of music, include:

  • children who play a musical instrument or sing in a choir are more likely to stay on at school and achieve higher grades
  • musical activities improve social skills
  • makes them (children) more adept at forming friendships
  • makes them (children) feel more positive about learning

The study found that children involved with music were more likely to respond to positive statements such as “I think school is important” and “I am glad to be in this school”. The study stresses that it is not necessary to have private music lessons and that “playing in a band or singing in the church choir are just as useful”.
